I wonder how many of us are aware that our unrestrained use of fossil fuels is not only pushing us towards a climate catastrophe but by increasing the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere we will end up poisoning our descendants as well?
Consider this … in May 2019 carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere topped 415 parts per million. Indeed, reaching 415.26 parts per million, according to sensors at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii, a research outpost of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency. But when scientists first started measuring atmospheric carbon dioxide consistently in 1958, at the Mauna Loa mountaintop observatory, the carbon dioxide level stood at 316 parts per million which was only a little higher than the pre-industrial level of 280 parts per million.
Why does this matter? Apart from the effect that rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide have on global temperatures due to the greenhouse effect, higher levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide are injurious to human health. Because carbon dioxide is a product of human metabolism, concentrations within a building are often used to indicate whether adequate fresh air is being supplied to the space. Moderate to high levels of carbon dioxide can cause headaches and fatigue, and higher concentrations can produce nausea, dizziness, and vomiting. And loss of consciousness can occur at extremely high concentrations.
That is within buildings but if those levels were being reached outside it could spell either doom or very bad times for the human race. In the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report from 2013, their most pessimistic scenario – where the population booms, technology stagnates, and emissions keep rising – the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide would reach a startling 2,000 parts per million by about 2250. In buildings that level is associated with headaches, sleepiness, and stagnant, stale, stuffy air; additionally poor concentration, loss of attention, increased heart rate and slight nausea may also be present. Push the worldwide level of carbon dioxide to 5,000 parts per million and toxicity or oxygen deprivation could occur.
Which is why continued burning in the Amazon rainforests is a problem for all of humanity, as this giant green reservoir produces 6% of the planet’s oxygen and absorbs 5% of the carbon emissions on the planet. And it has been estimated that 17% of the Brazilian rainforest has already been lost in the past fifty years.
Anyway, finishing on that rather sombre note, let’s see what Alles is wearing today.
