The September 2015 round of The Arcade Gacha will begin in just three days time and Tableau Vivant will be there with new hair which is wind and water themed – if you get my drift. I am wearing the RARE offering called Breeze, which given its length prompted me to think of a Lady Godiva-styled picture. “Fee-fi-fo-fum” is the first line of a historical quatrain (or sometimes couplet) famous for its use in the classic English fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk. The poem, as given in Joseph Jacobs’s 1890 rendition, is as follows:

Fee-fi-fo-fum,
I smell the blood of an Englishman,
Be he alive, or be he dead
I’ll grind his bones to make my bread.

The rhyme appears in Haue with You to Saffron-Walden published in 1596 and written by Thomas Nashe (who mentions that the rhyme was already old and its origins obscure):

Fy, Fa and fum,
I smell the bloud of an Englishman.

And in William Shakespeare’s play King Lear (c. 1605), the character of Edgar exclaims:

Fie, foh, and fum,
I smell the blood of a British man.

The 19th-Century Scottish author, Charles Mackay, proposed in The Gaelic Etymology of the Languages of Western Europe (1877) that the seemingly meaningless string of syllables “Fa fe fi fo fum” is actually a coherent phrase of ancient Gaelic, and that the complete quatrain covertly expressed the Celts’ cultural detestation of the invading Angles and Saxons:
Fa from faich (fa!) “behold!” or “see!”
Fe from Fiadh (fee-a) “food”;
Fi from fiú “good to eat”
Fo from fogh (fó) “sufficient” and
Fum from feum “hunger”.

Thus “Fa fe fi fo fum!” becomes “Behold food, good to eat, sufficient for my hunger!”

And those words kind of appeal to the Scots person who lingers within me!! 😀

Snakes and Ladders is an ancient Indian board game regarded today as a worldwide classic. It is played between two or more players on a gameboard having numbered, gridded squares. A number of “ladders” and “snakes” are pictured on the board, each connecting two specific board squares. The object of the game is to navigate one’s game piece, according to die rolls, from the start (bottom square) to the finish (top square), helped or hindered by ladders and snakes respectively.

The game is a simple race contest based on sheer luck, and is popular with young children. The historic version had root in morality lessons, where a player’s progression up the board represented a life journey complicated by virtues (ladders) and vices (snakes).

It’s always sad when a Second Life creator decides to pull up stumps, so to speak, on both their inworld and MarketPlace stores and send their much-loved creations into the abyss. Which was the case with Aurelia Chauveau’s MOLiCHiNO label just recently. Fortunately for fashion fans like moi, Aurelia gave us some advance notice of the impending closure, so I rushed like a mad thing to her store and bought as much as I could before the midnight hour of August 16th saw its end.

Then as a farewell tribute to MOLiCHiNO, I got together with my fellow Aussie bud, Mischa Moyet, to do a picture in the gorgeous Maggy dress.

It’s my never-ending problem in Second Life – hehe!! 😀

The Festival of Sin, is a Second Life event which first appeared on the grid back in early 2012. So its second incarnation – now alive and kicking on the grid from August 22nd through until September 5th – has been a long time coming!!
